Pray for NZ

There are no words adequate enough to describe the horror and sadness of what happend in Christchurch, New Zealand yesterday.

There are no words adequate enough to describe how our hearts grieve for all those who lost their lives – men, women, and children – and the families and friends they left behind.

There are no words adequate enough to describe the hurt and helplessness you feel when you see how actions and words of a few powerful men have villified an entire religion, race, or nationality.

In the words of Dr. Omid Safi:

“Words create worlds.

Beautiful words create beautiful worlds.
Hateful, divisive, angry words likewise create a hateful and ugly world.

We have to confront racist, anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant, anti-Semitic, patriarchal words. If we wish to create a different world, we have to confront these words everywhere and everywhere, and offer beautiful words instead.

This is global. The terrorist in New Zealand praised Trump, and praised Serbian genocidal anti-Muslim movements. The response also has to be global. Those of us committed to love and justice have to be reaching out to one another, comforting one another, loving on one another, and protecting one another.

Start at home. Hug your kids. Reach out to your Muslim friends.
Show up. Show up in love and solidarity and support.
We are in this together. Some of us are more vulnerable than others. It’s up to all of us to love and protect one another.”

PLEASE.

Stop Islamphobia.

Stop violence against Muslims.

Stop villifying immigrants.

Stop judging others based on their nationality, their religion, their race, their language, their gender, their looks…

We are all human.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can do that.

Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that.

May love and light guide us all.

  1. Devastated by what happened. Good friends in Christchurch who were affected by this tragedy.

We stand with our Muslim friends and community.
Like PM Arden said, New Zealand is your home. You are part of us.
